Precinct Election Officer Rules

DO YOU WANT TO BE A PRECINCT ELECTION OFFICER?

 

The Spencer County Clerk’s Office is always looking for responsible registered voters with excellent organizational and communication skills to serve as Precinct Election Officers.  A Precinct Election Officer is a very important person in the election process.  Precinct Election Officers must be present at the polling place all hours on Election Day, to ensure that voting is conducted fairly and orderly in their designated precinct. Each precinct is required to have at least 4 precinct officers, including 2 Republicans and 2 Democrats.  Each officer is paid $15.00 for election training, $115.00 for serving Election Day and an additional $6.00 if they choose to return the Election Day supplies to the clerk’s office that night.  Election Officers must possess the ability to complete assigned task in a cooperative and supportive manner.  The additional qualifications are as follows;

 

  • You must be a registered voter of Spencer County.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age by the date of the General Election of the serving year.
  • You cannot serve if you are the spouse, sibling, parent or child of a candidate who is to be voted for in your designated precinct; however you are able to serve in a precinct that your relative is not on the ballot.
  • You cannot serve if you are a candidate during the election.
  • You must be willing to work any precinct in Spencer County; however we will make every attempt to place you in the vacancy closest to your home.
  • You must assist your team in setting up and breaking down the voting equipment and setting out supplies.  This assistance requires sitting, standing, kneeling, lifting, pushing and twisting.
  • Professional conduct is mandatory when serving as a Precinct Election Officer.  Refusal to perform assigned duties in accordance with Election Officer’s training or Election laws will result in disqualification as an Election Officer.
  • You must attend a 2.5 hour training session before the election.  This training will be held locally and you will be paid for this training along with your Election Day salary.
  • You day will begin at 5:30 a.m. (or earlier if you feel it necessary) when you arrive at the precinct.  You will arrange all the necessary election materials and double check voting equipment to ensure privacy and security for all voters during the voting process.
  • Polls must be open by 6:00 a.m.
  • You must treat all voters with respect and courtesy.
  • Process voters and provide any legally allowed assistance.
  • Polls close at 6:00 p.m. (after the last person in line at 6 has voted)
  • You must complete all necessary paperwork and return all election supplies to the Spencer County Clerk’s Office election night.
